Puzzles

The box with a thousand pieces is somewhere in a closet in a lot of houses, unopened because nobody had two hours and a clear table at the same time. That is a solvable problem, and it is worth solving, because what puzzles teach is not patience — it is that confusion is a stage, not a dead end. A kid who learns to sit with a problem they cannot immediately crack, and to keep working it anyway, is learning something that transfers to nearly everything else they will do.

The honest reason I did not start sooner is that I thought I had to finish with them. I don't. A puzzle left out on a side table is something you come back to. It does not need to be an event.

The concrete first move: pick a weekend afternoon, get a jigsaw with a piece count that feels almost too easy — 100 pieces for a six-year-old, 300 for a ten-year-old — and tip it out on a surface you can leave undisturbed. Start with the edges. Not because that is the rule, but because it gives both of you something to do for the first ten minutes while you figure out how to work next to each other.

Edges first, then the middle6–8

Staying with a problem past the first moment of not knowing is something you can practise.

A six-year-old can sort pieces by color without being able to explain why that helps, and that instinct is worth following. Let them sort. The puzzle does not need to go together in any particular order, and correcting a wrong approach at this age mostly just teaches them to wait for you to tell them what to do next.

The piece count matters more than anything else here. A 100-piece puzzle with a high-contrast image — a bright animal, a cartoon scene, not a landscape of similar-colored sky — will get finished in one sitting, which matters for the first few times. A four-year-old told they finished a puzzle will want to do another one. That momentum is real and easy to lose if the first one takes three sessions and still isn't done.

Around seven or eight, some kids start to develop a genuine strategy: they will look at the shape of the gap before hunting for the piece rather than trying pieces at random. When that happens, say something like "How'd you know that one fit?" and let them explain it. The explaining is the part that locks it in.

If this is your first time starting and your child is already seven or eight, the 100-piece jigsaw is still the right entry point — not because it is easy, but because finishing it the first time is what makes them want to come back.

When the jigsaw gets boring9–12

A problem with one correct answer and no visible path to it is a different kind of hard — and it is worth getting comfortable with that difference.

By ten or so, a jigsaw alone is not enough of a puzzle — the method is understood and the challenge is mostly time. This is when logic puzzles start to make sense: grid puzzles where you eliminate possibilities, mystery puzzles where you track clues, or number puzzles that do not require arithmetic so much as pattern recognition. Einstein's riddle — the one with the five houses — is genuinely hard for an adult and completely accessible to a ten-year-old who likes that kind of thinking.

The move here is to do one together first. Not to teach, but to show that you also get stuck. A nine-year-old watching an adult re-read a clue three times and still not see it gets something useful from that: being stuck is part of the process, not evidence that you are bad at this.

They will probably get somewhere before you do, on some clues. When they do, try "Walk me through it" rather than just taking their word for it. Explaining a logical step to someone else is harder than making it, and they almost always find a gap they did not know was there.

If you are starting here for the first time — no earlier puzzle habit, kid is ten or eleven — skip the jigsaw entirely and go straight to a logic grid puzzle printed from any puzzle site. A ten-year-old who has never done one is not behind; the format is new to everyone the first time.

Harder problems, less guidance13–17

A thirteen-year-old is not going to sit down with you over a jigsaw unless they are already in the habit of it, and that is fine. The version of puzzles that works at this age is more likely to be a puzzle hunt, an escape-room kit, or a hard logic or math competition problem — something with stakes or novelty, something they can show competence at rather than something that feels like a children's toy.

The ask here is different. You are not teaching them to tolerate confusion; by now they know whether they can do that or not, and if they have a short fuse with unsolvable problems, naming it is more useful than working around it. What you can offer is a harder problem than they would pick for themselves, and the company of someone who is also visibly working.

A printout of a competition logic problem left on the kitchen table will get looked at. It does not need an introduction. If they pick it up, that is the moment — not to explain it, but to say "I haven't figured out the third clue" and mean it.

If you are starting at this age with no puzzle history at all, a one-room escape-room experience — the kind you book and go to — is the cleanest entry point. It is social, it is timed, and it requires no prior knowledge. It also shows you, very quickly, how they handle being stuck with other people watching, which is the thing worth knowing.

The mistake everyone makes

Helping too fast. The moment a kid slows down, it is tempting to point at a piece or suggest a strategy. That kills the thing the puzzle is actually doing. Wait longer than feels comfortable before saying anything.
